Фильм, на самом деле, еще более оптимистичен, чем кажется на первый взгляд.
Он о том, что разделение людей по критериям успешности и неудачливости, счастливости и несчастливости, активности и индеферентности, униженности и вознесению на верх иерархической лестницы очень условно.
Мы просто есть и всё. Вот такие, какие есть. То добрые, то не очень, то испуганные, то храбрые, то любящие, то не могущие сосуществовать вместе, то понимающие, то отталкивающие, то… это всё в нас есть.
И мир по отношению к нам тоже всегда разный. И это совершенно не значит, что ты не получишь от этого мира на свой вопрос ответ, реакцию, отклик, помощь, если они тебе нужны. Если ты сможешь довериться окружающим, то получишь это именно так, как оно, действительно, возможно, именно от тех людей, которые к этому готовы, именно в том виде, который тебе и нужен на самом деле.
И, несмотря на интересный своеобразный почерк режиссера, на его постмодернистский условный театрализованный мир, на неуловимое соотношение абсурдности и реальности, на сказочность ситуаций и взаимоотношений между людьми эти мысли четко считываются с экрана, так четко – как будто они написаны черным по белому.
И своеобразный, не всегда очевидный, довольно тонкий, отточенный до остроты и отчасти рафинированный юмор очень помогает зрителю прочитать написанное автором.
Причем, желательно расслабиться с самого начала фильма – юмор начинается с первых же кадров…
События текут медленно, своим чередом, не забегая вперед и не возвращаясь назад. И истории двух главных героев – коммивояжера в отставке, а теперь ресторатора в местном не очень-то фешенебельном кафе, и беженца от ужасов сирийской войны – совершенно идентичны.
Если человека не устраивает его текущее положение, то можно начать это менять, искать пути выхода из неприемлемости.
Правда, цена такого выхода может быть чересчур высокой.
Но надо понимать, что цена не будет зависеть от твоего социального слоя и окружения, от твоего финансового состояния, от престижности и востребованности твоей работы… а будет зависеть от сложности ситуации, твоего отношения к ней, людей вокруг тебя, открытости хорошему, терпеливости, умения сохранять человеческое достоинство в казалось бы нечеловеческих условиях, устремленности в будущее и, конечно, настроения…
А перед этим мы все равны.
Если касаться непосредственно сюжета фильма, то нас поразил тот факт, что, оказывается, если судить по фильму, финны тоже не живут исключительно согласно букве закона, как и русские. А нам казалось, что они весьма законопослушные граждане – так рассказывают про всех европейцев.
Или режиссер Аки Каурисмяки представляет нам в картине свое видение идеального мира людей, независимо от их национальной принадлежности?
Это вполне возможно.
Но в любом случае люди здесь сами по себе и играют с государством в «веселую» игру. И именно они могут проявить человечность и доброту, понимание и отзывчивость, взаимовыручку и сочувствие. И тогда несложно преодолеть бюрократические препоны и иное зло.
Именно так в России до сих пор относятся к государству: есть мы – люди, а есть еще и государство. Вряд ли это правильно. Но это привычно и очень по-русски. Финны, мы с вами… Теперь мы будем считать, что такие отношения с государством – это и по-фински.
И еще в этой ленте невероятно притягательная и душевная музыка.
Возможно, она такова именно для меня, так как корни ее в 80-х прошлого века. С первых кадров мелодия настраивает на мягкий и светлый лад, задает правильное направление чувствования – и это здорово! Обаятельно и стильно!
Если хотите увидеть просто и доступно снятое кино, доброе и романтичное, без спецэффектов и попыток удержать внимание зрителя запрещенными приемами, но кино не в стороне от жизни, а в самой ее гуще, такое, в котором происходит то, что ежедневно происходит на улицах вокруг вас, с вами на работе и дома, в метро и в трамвае, во сне и во время бодрствования, вчера и сегодня, сейчас и всегда…, то посмотрите «По ту сторону надежды» .

The film, in fact, is even more optimistic than it seems at first glance.
It is that the separation of people according to the criteria of success and failure, happiness and unhappiness, activity and indifference, humiliation and ascension to the top of the hierarchy is very arbitrary.
We just have it. These are the ones that are. Either kind, sometimes not very scared, sometimes brave, sometimes loving, sometimes unable to coexist together, sometimes understanding, sometimes repulsive, then … this is all in us.
And the world in relation to us is also always different. And this does not mean at all that you will not receive an answer, reaction, response, help from this world if you need them. If you can trust others, you will get it exactly as it is, indeed, possibly from those people who are ready for this, in the form that you really need.
And, despite the director’s interesting peculiar handwriting, his post-modern conditional theatrical world, the elusive ratio of absurdity and reality, the fabulous situations and relationships between people, these thoughts are clearly read from the screen, as clearly as if they were written in black and white. And the peculiar, not always obvious, rather subtle, sharpened to the point and partly refined humor helps the viewer to read the author’s writing. Moreover, it is advisable to relax from the very beginning of the film — humor begins from the very first frames …
Events flow slowly, in their own way, without running ahead and not coming back. And the stories of the two main characters — a retired traveling salesman, and now a restaurateur in a local, not very fashionable cafe, and a refugee from the horrors of the Syrian war — are completely identical.
If a person is not satisfied with his current position, then you can begin to change this, look for ways out of unacceptability.
True, the price of such an exit may be too high.
But you need to understand that the price will not depend on your social layer and environment, on your financial condition, on the prestige and relevance of your work … but it will depend on the complexity of the situation, your attitude to it, the people around you, openness to good, patience , the ability to maintain human dignity in seemingly inhuman conditions, striving for the future and, of course, mood …
And before that, we are all equal.
If we deal directly with the plot of the film, we were struck by the fact that, judging by the film, the Finns also do not live exclusively according to the letter of the law, like the Russians. And it seemed to us that they are very law-abiding citizens — this is how they talk about all Europeans.
Or is the director Aki Kaurismäki presenting to us in the film his vision of the ideal world of people, regardless of their nationality?
It is quite possible.
But in any case, people here are on their own and play a “fun” game with the state. And it is they who can show humanity and kindness, understanding and responsiveness, mutual assistance and sympathy. And then it is easy to overcome bureaucratic obstacles and other evil.
That is how people in Russia still relate to the state: we are people, and there is also a state. This is hardly correct. But this is familiar and very Russian. Finns, we are with you … Now we will consider that such relations with the state are also in Finnish.
And in this tape incredibly attractive and sincere music. Perhaps it is just for me, since its roots were in the 80s of the last century. From the first shots, the melody tunes to a soft and bright tone, sets the right direction of feeling — and it’s great! Charming and stylish!
If you want to see a simple and accessible movie shot, kind and romantic, without special effects and attempts to keep the viewer’s attention with forbidden tricks, but the movie is not aloof from life, but in its thickest part, in which what happens every day happens on the streets around you, with you at work and at home, in the subway and in the tram, in sleep and during wakefulness, yesterday and today, now and always … then look “The Other Side of Hope”.
