Вечерний туман окутывает леса и поля, просеки и тропинки, он делает жизнь усадьбы таинственной. Обильная же утренняя роса сопровождает пробуждение всего живого к новому дню, и её капли отражают первые лучи солнца и синеву ясного неба.

Атмосфера неброской, но удивительно пленяющей природы яснополянской усадьбы побуждает желание почувствовать её вновь и вновь.

Лев Николаевич Толстой, великий русский писатель и философ, в 1847 году получил в наследство от своих предков внушительных размеров поместье Ясная Поляна, площадью около 1200 гектаров. Дед писателя по материнской линии, Николай Сергеевич Волконский, сыграл решающую роль в судьбе яснополянской усадьбы, став ее главным строителем и скупив у прежних владельцев разрозненные части общей территории. Именно он создал здесь крупное имение, к которому мы и привыкли относить название «Ясная Поляна».

Когда-то яснополянские земли были пограничными: с чужеземной стороны к русским рубежам катились волны кочевых нашествий. В XVI веке для защиты московских владений в здешних лесах начинают сооружать засеки – этакие баррикады из срубленных деревьев, которые защищали границы от свободного проезда. Одним из призасечных поселений было сельцо Ясная Поляна, впервые упоминаемое в документах 1652 года.

В настоящий момент площадь зеленой зоны заповедника музея-усадьбы «Ясная Поляна» составляет 440 гектаров.

В число территорий, находящихся ранее во владении Волконских-Толстых, а сейчас не включенных в заповедные земли, входила и деревня с необычным для русского слуха названием Грумант. Она расположена у западной границы лесопарковой зоны, в 3 километрах от Ясной Поляны. Семья Толстых нередко приезжала сюда — здесь была молочная ферма, построенная еще Волконским.

 «Место было прелестное, и не только пить там молоко и сливки с черным хлебом, холодные и густые, как сметана, и присутствовать при ловле рыбы, но просто побывать там, побегать на гору и под гору, к пруду и от пруда было великое наслаждение…»

Действительно, рельеф местности около деревни Грумант впечатляет своими просторами и живописностью. Совершенно согласны с Толстым – очень хочется бежать с горы к запруде и обратно, валяться в луговом разнотравье и вдыхать-вдыхать-вдыхать запахи свежего ветра, цветочных ароматов и речной прохлады.

Мы несколько раз посещали усадьбу и прилегающий лесопарк. Чтобы вдоволь нагуляться и накататься на велосипедах по дорожкам зеленой зоны, чтобы увидеть своими глазами те места, которые Толстой описывал в романах, одного раза нам оказалось недостаточно.

Обычно к музею-усадьбе «Ясная Поляна» на автомобиле подъезжают из Москвы со стороны центрального входа на улице Льва Толстого, берущей свое начало в Туле. Но так как мы жили в парк-отеле «Грумант», то имели возможность посетить заповедник, въехав в него на велосипедах со стороны деревни Грумант, с той наиболее удаленной от дома-музея части яснополянского лесного массива.

Пересекая плотину большого пруда на речке Кочак (Кочаки) за деревней, можно вдоль водоёма, по несколько размытой проселочной дороге, двигаться к Ясной Поляне, объезжая далее лесистые холмы.

В этой, удаленной, части заповедника вольно́ вдоволь насладиться безлюдностью и невытаптонностью дорожек, густотой лесных зарослей вокруг и красотой постоянно меняющего холмистого ландшафта местности.

… Но тишина и спокойствие постепенно исчезают с продвижением к дому-музею Толстого. Посетителей на дорожках всё прибывает, практически невозможно остаться в одиночестве, и то очарование тайны, которое может дать незамусоленная людскими взглядами природа, несколько рассеивается.

При этом, нам не давал покоя вопрос происхождения замысловатого названия деревни – Грумант – еще со старых времен.

Самая распространенная версия происхождения названия Грумант связана с дедом писателя – князем Н.С. Волконским, по имеющейся информации служившем губернатором в Архангельске. Вернувшись в родные места в 1799 году для воспитания единственной дочери, он в память о северных местах таким образом переименовал одну из принадлежавших ему деревень.

В те времена Грумантом называли весь полярный архипелаг Шпицберген. По легенде – когда русские во время своих плаваний от Новой Земли вдоль кромки льдов на запад увидели горы и ледники Шпицбергена, они сочли, что подошли к Гренландии и потому назвали открытую ими землю Грундландом, или, иначе, Грумантом.

Но есть и иная версия. Полагают, что дед Толстого по дворянской моде своего времени назвал деревню на англицкий манер. В основу положены корень «грум» (англ. groom — конюх) и суффикс делателя «ант».

Кстати слово «грум» не только английское. В русском языке оно имело значения извозчика на передке конного экипажа, охранника на запятках кареты и конного сопровождающего для знатных персон.

Таким образом, деревня Грумант могла получить название как поставщик работников по конюшенно-извозному делу. Не случайно шикарная яснополянская конюшня была построена аккурат через лужайку напротив главного фасада Дома Волконского.

Точное время постройки Дома Волконского неизвестно. Но, вероятно, возведен он был не князем Николаем Сергеевичем Волконским, а появился ранее — это самое старое каменное здание на территории Ясной Поляны. Пока шло строительство большого жилого дома усадьбы и флигелей, которые должны были расположиться в стороне от хозяйственных служб, князь с дочерью жили в этом доме, позднее получившем название Дома Волконского.

Уже при Николае Сергеевиче здесь располагались усадебные мастерские, жила прислуга, напротив дома была выстроена каменная конюшня.

Рядом располагался каретный сарай и птичник.

С другой стороны дома – кучерский домик.

В Ясной Поляне лошади были всегда — и рабочие, и выездные.

Лев Николаевич Толстой даже хотел вывести свою породу, скрещивая чистокровных английских верховых с быстроногими степными лошадками.

Учитывая всё сказанное, и вторая версия происхождения названия деревни Грумант имеет веские основания.

Evening fog envelops forests and fields, glades and paths, it makes the life of the estate mysterious. Abundant morning dew accompanies the awakening of all living things to a new day, and its drops reflect the first rays of the sun and the blue of the clear sky.

The atmosphere of the discreet, but surprisingly captivating nature of the Yasnaya Polyana estate encourages the desire to feel it again and again.

Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy, the great Russian writer and philosopher, inherited from his ancestors in 1847 a large estate, Yasnaya Polyana, with an area of ​​about 1200 hectares. The writer’s maternal grandfather, Nikolai Sergeevich Volkonsky, played a decisive role in the fate of the Yasnaya Polyana estate, becoming its main builder and buying up scattered parts of the common territory from the previous owners. It was he who created a large estate here, to which we are accustomed to refer the name «Yasnaya Polyana».

Once upon a time, the Yasnaya Polyana lands were borderlands: waves of nomadic invasions rolled from the foreign side to the Russian borders. In the 16th century, to protect Moscow’s possessions, barriers began to be erected in the local forests — a sort of barricade of felled trees that protected the borders from free passage. One of the settlements adjacent to the obstructions was the village of Yasnaya Polyana, first mentioned in documents of 1652.

At the moment, the area of ​​the green zone of the reserve of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum-Estate is 440 hectares.

Among the territories previously in the possession of the Volkonsky-Tolstoy, and now not included in the reserved lands, there was also a village with an unusual name for the Russian ear, Grumant. It is located at the western border of the forest park zone, 3 kilometers from Yasnaya Polyana. The Tolstoy family often came here — there was a dairy farm built by Volkonsky.

Indeed, the terrain near the village of Grumant is impressive for its spaciousness and picturesqueness. We completely agree with Tolstoy — I really want to run from the mountain to the dam and back, wallow in the meadow grasses and inhale, inhale, inhale the smells of fresh wind, floral aromas and river coolness.

We visited the estate and the adjacent forest park several times. One time was not enough for us to walk and ride bicycles along the paths of the green zone, to see with our own eyes the places that Tolstoy described in his novels.

Usually, people drive up to the Yasnaya Polyana estate museum by car from Moscow from the central entrance on Lev Tolstoy Street, which originates in Tula. But since we lived in the park-hotel «Grumant», we had the opportunity to visit the reserve, having driven into it on bicycles from the side of the village of Grumant, from the part of the Yasnaya Polyana forest area farthest from the house-museum. Crossing the dam of a large pond on the Kochak (Kochaki) river outside the village, you can move along the reservoir, along a somewhat washed-out country road, to Yasnaya Polyana, going around the wooded hills.

In this remote part of the reserve, you can freely enjoy the desertedness and non-staple paths, the dense forest thickets around and the beauty of the constantly changing hilly landscape of the area.

… But the silence and tranquility gradually disappear as we move towards the Tolstoy house-museum. Visitors on the paths all arrive, it is almost impossible to remain alone, and the charm of mystery that nature untouched by human eyes can give is somewhat dissipated.

At the same time, we were haunted by the question of the origin of the intricate name of the village — Grumant — since ancient times.

The most common version of the origin of the name Grumant is associated with the writer’s grandfather, Prince N.S. Volkonsky, who reportedly served as governor in Arkhangelsk. Returning to his native places in 1799 to raise his only daughter, he renamed one of the villages that belonged to him in memory of the northern places.

In those days, the entire polar archipelago of Svalbard was called Grumant. According to legend, when the Russians, during their voyages from Novaya Zemlya along the edge of the ice to the west, saw the mountains and glaciers of Spitsbergen, they considered that they approached Greenland and therefore called the land they discovered Grundland, or, in other words, Grumant.

But there is also another version. It is believed that Tolstoy’s grandfather, in the noble fashion of his time, named the village in the English manner. It is based on the root «groom» (English groom — groom) and the suffix of the doer «ant».

By the way, the word «groom» is not only English. In Russian, it meant a cabman on the front end of a horse-drawn carriage, a guard on the heels of a carriage and an equestrian escort for noble persons.

Thus, the village of Grumant could be named as a supplier of horse-riding workers. It is no coincidence that the chic Yasnaya Polyana stable was built exactly across the lawn opposite the main facade of the Volkonsky House.

The exact time of the construction of the Volkonsky House is unknown. But, probably, it was not erected by Prince Nikolai Sergeevich Volkonsky, but appeared earlier — this is the oldest stone building on the territory of Yasnaya Polyana. While the construction of a large residential building of the estate and outbuildings, which were supposed to be located aside from the utility services, was underway, the prince and his daughter lived in this house, which later received the name of the Volkonsky House.

Already under Nikolai Sergeevich, estate workshops were located here, a servant lived, a stone stable was built opposite the house.

There was a carriage shed and a poultry house nearby.

On the other side of the house is a coachman’s house.

There have always been horses in Yasnaya Polyana — both workers and traveling ones.

Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy even wanted to breed his own breed, crossing thoroughbred English riding with swift steppe horses.

Considering all that has been said, the second version of the origin of the name of the village of Grumant has good reasons.
