Ostankino, I have known this corner of the 18th century since childhood: first, I was with my grandmother or with my parents, and then on my own. Silently rustling ancient trees are soothing, and the park and the palace, connected by common harmony, deliver aesthetic pleasure.
Once located near Moscow, this estate is now located directly in the city, not so far from the center, and attracts lovers of beauty with its strict forms of classical architecture, the refined beauty of the palace’s interiors and the secluded silence of an old park.
I told about the park in the publication of Ostankino # 1.
Now about the Ostankino Palace.
The palace of Count Sheremetev, despite its dizzying luxury, is all wooden. But there is nothing typical of a «rural» house in it. This is a completely urban building and could also successfully decorate any street in Moscow. Only the impressive size of the mansion, in which it was necessary to concentrate everything necessary for a wide aristocratic life, reminds that this is part of a country estate.
In the lowlands of a meadow near Moscow, at the edge of a dusty road and not frequent, but monolithic forest, elegant porticoes rise, bas-reliefs and garlands appear, echoing the architectural dynamics — before us are the creations of masters in the spirit of the highest artistic symphony.
In the native cloudy Russian light, the shadows of the bas-reliefs soothe the special clarity of the palace lines, the gentle mother-of-pearl-gray shadows of the columns with ghostly silhouettes lie on the smooth surface of the facade. In such a softened concept, classic beauty is perfectly combined with the familiar gray sky and discreet meadows…
The forms of the Ostankino Palace are canonically exemplary. At the same time, the general spirit of its architectural appearance is characteristic of the understanding of the beauty of luxury, abundance and pretentiousness that dominate throughout the 18th century. The decoration of its rich interiors was mainly completed by 1798.
I have been to the palace more than once. On our last visit, guided groups of visitors were launched into the entrance of the west wing of the building.
It should be borne in mind that you cannot get to the palace in any weather. Since it is made of wood (like the residence in Kuskovo), in rainy, damp weather, as well as with a certain drop in temperature, you can see an announcement about the impossibility of visiting the mansion for technical reasons.
We were lucky: September day was warm and sunny.
Since the palace has unique parquet floors, visitors to this temple of art wear special slippers.
Passing through the gallery to the Italian Pavilion, we have not yet seen the previously remembered ones, whipping over the edge of elegance and abundance of interior decorations.
The pavilion consists of a spacious central part and four corner offices. The generosity of its «beauty» is a bit puzzling, just like, for example, putting ten cloves instead of one clove in a roast, or adding 100 grams of this spice instead of 10 grams of vanilla to cream. Here you can spend hours looking at each piece of interior separately: candelabra, incense burners, chests of drawers, tables, bronze tags in front of fireplaces, clocks, vases, consoles — in all these everyday objects, the finest art and the integrity of harmony are presented in abundance.
The abundance of mirrors and gilding, lush carved decor, crystal chandeliers create a feeling of bright festivity. The parquet floor is decorated in the center with a mahogany, ebony and rosewood insert with a pattern of garlands of bells and daisies. It should be mentioned that Ostankino patterned parquet floors are especially famous. They were recruited from various types of wood, and a unique effect was achieved due to the alternation of fragments with different directions of wood fibers relative to the light source.
It is striking that many seemingly bronze objects are actually made of gilded wood. This intricate carving is the work of the serf Sheremetev carvers. Although they had before their eyes models and drawings of the best masters of their time exported from abroad, it still seems a miracle that this art of ordinary Russian people, who so well adopted overseas «inventions».
Above this merciless spice of the hall stretches an excellent stucco ceiling, full of that undisguised charm that captivates us in the best parts of the Ostankino Palace. This ceiling more than compensates for the massive blow of the decor of the Italian hall on the sense of proportion of the tourists.
The Italian pavilion is adjoined by a small semicircular room — the Rotunda, a round domed hall, which in the summer was supposed to turn into a column gazebo open from the garden side. Later, the Rotunda was turned into an office. It was in this cabinet that Alexander II signed one of the decrees relating to the peasant reform of 1861. Count D.N. Sheremetev, in memory of the stay in Ostankino of Emperor Alexander II with his family during the coronation celebrations of 1856, ordered a photo album.
From the Italian pavilion, a walk-through gallery goes to the central part of the palace. In terms of the richness of the decoration, this gallery can hardly be called a checkpoint. Its coloring is sustained in sonorous tones, with a predominance of red and terracotta, and its luxury is not inferior to the adjoining hall.
Overhead we have a magnificent painted ceiling with graceful, rare unique lamps — the property of the museum. It should be noted that the Ostankino Palace has a wonderful collection of crystal chandeliers, lanterns and girandoles, unique in that all the lamps are in their original places, in accordance with the intention of the interior designers.
Further, the special concert hall located on the first floor is not subject to visit this time — the guide will take us straight to the heart of the palace — the Theater, located on the second floor. The spacious theater hall is the semantic and compositional center of the entire palace.
The main arias were performed in the foreground and the main episodes of the performance were played out. In front of the proscenium, behind a carved balustrade, there was an orchestra of thirty musicians. The Ostankino theater, in contrast to the theater in Kuskovo, was purely domestic, its performances were intended only for a narrow circle of friends and acquaintances of the owner of the estate. Therefore, the stage takes up almost twice as much space as the auditorium, designed for no more than 200-250 spectators. In the parterre there were benches in five rows and two large carved canapes. The amphitheater consisted of thirty lifting benches covered with soft mattresses. The lifting benches of the amphitheater, freed from mattresses, lowered one level with the stage and became the floor plane — then the spacious room turned into a hall for dancing and banquets, the so-called «voxal». Now the mechanism for raising the benches of the amphitheater is not shown to visitors. And as a child, I still saw a demonstration of a working mechanism to tourists. I remember — it made an indelible impression on me then. This is the only thing that has survived in my memory from my first visit to the palace.
The flat ceiling above the auditorium looks like a volumetric dome thanks to the skillful painting by the Italian artist G. Valesini.
The Ostankino theater was equipped with the latest stage technology of that time and adapted to carry out any, even the most complex, performances.
The count’s penchant for the then fashionable fun — the theater — turned from a hobby into the work of his whole life. Having a well-trained troupe with an extensive repertoire and several theater rooms, N.P. Sheremetev conceived and implemented a project of a summer entertainment residence, unique for Russia. In the spirit of the Enlightenment, inclined towards the ideas of common cultures and the unity of civilization, Ostankino was conceived as the Pantheon of Arts, a palace in which the theater reigns.
His beloved wife, Praskovya Zhemchugova, shone on this stage. In the silvery gloom of the old hall, a picture of a ceremonial performance easily arises in the imagination: chandeliers burned with hundreds of lights, pouring thick shadows over the walls behind the columns, a group of spectators in picturesque costumes strewn with lace and diamonds, seemed to match the troupe of actors with their exquisite movements … a stage for the brilliance of the beloved woman and the pleasure of «directing» social gatherings, where guests followed his plans and obeyed the course of theatrical performances.
He himself very stubbornly delved into all the details of the construction of the palace, consulted with the architects, sometimes disagreed with them and made to his liking, choosing models for interior decoration and furnishings. As a result of such close attention of the count to the details of construction, we do not find in Ostankino the creation of one great master, but the era, the understanding of beauty that united all the masters of the end of the 18th century, is presented in it in full force and in the euphonious eclecticism of individual parts.
The external architecture of the palace, taken as a whole, does not make a particularly favorable impression: in a large, squat building, those perfect parts of it, which individually are unusually beautiful, are somewhat lost…
At the same time, in aesthetic terms, it is one of the most charming Moscow buildings of the 18th century. No money was spared for Ostankino, and everyone who touched him gave the best that he could.
Then we go down to the first floor to the Egyptian hall. And here, finally, we come across real authentic mica windows. Here you are!
There is not much Egyptian in this room. If only griffins and sphinxes, carved in the spirit of Egyptian art. In the main lines, the Egyptian Hall is nobly simple, but this simplicity, given its large size, creates an impression of majestic clarity.
The almost complete absence of furniture does not make the hall empty: each part of it is in its place and the gaze gladly moves from one piece of furniture to another, without experiencing the effect of oversaturation. A wonderful high ceiling decorated with painting and molding, crystal chandeliers, several candelabra and inconspicuous sofas do not give the hall the character of a living space. It’s attractive — you don’t want such a rare, wondrous beauty to adapt to everyday life…
And what a noble restraint in the garden façade of the east wing! Slumbering lions guard the entrance with four Ionic columns: there is great skill in the deliberate simplicity of the architectural composition, the artist’s sincere self-confidence.
We leave the Ostankino Palace, feeling that prayer of beauty being created, which for more than 200 years has carried away those who touch it into the eternal, infinite…
Hi
Wonderful Ostankion palace of architecture plan. Beautiful all designed work. Very historical palace. Italian work. What did means parquet flooring and Slipper.very nice post.
glad it was interesting.
Parquet is a type of wooden floor covering. https://yandex.ru/turbo/ru.wikipedia.org/s/wiki/
Slippers are special footwear, often indoor. in this case, they are worn over outdoor shoes so as not to damage the parquet flooring of the palace.
Very nice it’s mange. Good rules. I like.nice care about.
many old buildings — architectural monuments fall into disrepair due to careless handling. now they have become more attentive to this. it’s good.👍😊🌞
